In this role, you will contribute your expertise to the team by overseeing the production of collimators and masks within WP5 of the High-Luminosity LHC Project.The role involves supporting critical operational tasks, such as mechanical assemblies, components logistics, on-site assembly area management, execution of assembly and testing procedures related to collimators and masks essential for LS3 (Long Shutdown 3).This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a crucial phase of the HL-LHC Project (WP5). To prosper and grow in this position, you should possess a blend of technical proficiency, hands-on skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving.Your responsibilities will include:Executing collimator reception tests, quality checks and related mechanical assembly activities, ensuring adherence to project timelines and quality standards.Managing the tests related to the collimator’s surface mock up:Handling of collimators;Monitoring of the tests with other CERN teams;Writing test reports.Assisting with the removal of collimators from the LHC Machine, organising the storage and modifying some radioactive supports.Managing the thermal test bench of collimator jaws (located in Italy), replacing parts and conducting maintenance when required.Organising and following up with transport and packing for hardware.Ordering components required for the surface activities of collimators at CERN.When required, managing the production of parts and sub-assemblies required for the collimators.If project schedule allows, participating in the collimators and masks installation in the machine.The responsibilities outlined above may vary slightly depending on the priorities of the project and how the schedule progresses.More information here:https://cds.cern.ch/record/2928947Your profileSkillsKnowledge of assemblies in ultra-high vacuum environment (desired)Operating conventional and numeric production machines (saw, lathe, milling machine) (desired)Production with rapid prototyping technology-andling, packing, labellingControlling cranes (training at CERN if required)Ability to work with Microsoft office, in particular Word, Excel and Power PointSpoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.Eligibility criteria:You are a national of aCERN Member or Associate Member State.By the application deadline,you have amaximum of two years of professional experience since graduationin Mechanics (or a related field)andyour highest educational qualification is a general secondary education diploma.You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.Applicants with a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree are not eligible.Additional InformationJob closing date:29th of May at 23:59 (midnight) CEST.Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.Working hours: 40 hours per weekTarget start date: 01-September-2025This position involves:Work in Radiation Areas.Interventions in underground installations.A valid driving licence.Use of certain mobile work equipment or equipment used for lifting loads (lifting equipment, bridge cranes, aerial work platforms, etc.) requiring a driving authorization.Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.Job reference: SY-STI-TCD-2025-80-GRAEField of work: Mechanical EngineeringWhat we offerA monthly stipend of4624Swiss Francs (net of tax).Coverage by CERN’s comprehensivehealth scheme(for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERNPension Fund.Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.30 days of paid leave per year.On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.About usAt CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe.
