Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.Job DescriptionIntroductionAre you an experienced Applied Physicist who specialised in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of novel particle detectors for large high-energy physics experiments? Would you like to join an international team of physicists, engineers and technicians to work on one of the most challenging future subsystems of a flagship LHC experiment? You will be working in CERN’s Experimental Physics (EP) department in the CMS Experiment Systems Group (CMX), specifically within the Endcap Calorimetry (EC) section, helping to shape the future of high-energy physics. The CMS Experiment is one of the four large experiments at the CERN LHC. The High-Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is one of the largest upgrades of the CMS detector for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), a completely new endcap calorimeter with both electromagnetic and hadronic sections. 600m2 of silicon modules and 300 m2 of plastic scintillators are grouped into “cassettes” and used to provide precise measurements of energy, position, and timing. The CERN team has a deep implication in HGCAL, including responsibilities in the mechanics, technical coordination, and electronics. In particular, we are responsible for the HGCAL backend electronics control and DAQ system that comprises hardware, firmware, and software.FunctionsAs a member of the HGCAL team you will play a leading role in the development and implementation of the DAQ system and its operation. You will work with a varied group of people from CERN and the CMS collaboration, to develop and test systems of increasing size and complexity up to the full endcap detector in the CMS experiment. You will:Architect and implement the HGCAL online software for the DAQ and non-event-data monitoring.Provide expertise to shape the firmware and hardware developments, and adapt the software development to changes in the firmware and hardware.Play a leading role in the provisioning of the DAQ system used for testing assembled cassettes at CERN and FNAL using the final frontend and backend electronics, and establish operational scenarios and procedures based on that experience.Play a leading role in the commissioning of the HGCAL detector, both on the surface through full sector tests, and underground after installation in CMS, going all the way from the procedures needed to trim the frontend electronics ADCs and TDCs, to the calibration of the detector with external signals, including particles.Be responsible for interfacing with other groups in HGCAL as needed to establish a fully operational system, including the detector performance group, the powering group, and the detector control and safety system groups.Play a leading role in integrating the HGCAL system into central CMS services, namely the run control and central DAQ, but also configuration and conditions databases.Contribute to develop common solutions to other HGCAL backend electronics systems, including the two stages of trigger primitive generation.Be responsible for the HGCAL detector development laboratory at CERN and for maintaining an HGCAL DAQ development facility.Contribute to the HGCAL backend electronics production testing.Supervise CERN graduates and students.QualificationsPhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Particle Physics, Particle Detectors or a related field.Experience:You have demonstrated experience in:Developing, constructing, installing, and operating detectors.Calorimeter calibration and calorimetry techniques for the LHC.Working with front-end and backend electronics, and hard real time data acquisition and trigger systems.Coordinating small teams.Working effectively with students and other collaborators. You also have:An understanding of firmware and hardware concepts and constraints.Technical competencies:Simulation, design and development of (parts of) detectors.Analysis and optimization of detector performance.Knowledge and application of calorimetry methods and techniques: in particular sampling calorimeters at a hadron collider.Development of software for embedded and real-time systems with/without OS: in particular for data acquisition.Testing and validation of detector, accelerator and beam line components.Behavioural competencies:Managing Self: handling uncertainty and ambiguity calmly and effectively, taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen, working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind, driving work / projects along and seeing them through to their conclusion, following through on new ideas and innovations; planning and implementing application.Solving Problems: recognizing what is essential; discriminating between important and peripheral information and being able to see the whole picture; finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgments based on all the facts available; seeking and integrating other points of view when tackling an issue; consulting experts in the field and undertaking benchmarking.Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships; working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities; seeking to help other team members when own work is done; supporting others.Learning and Sharing Knowledge: taking steps to expand knowledge in other areas of expertise beyond own field; learning from own successes and failures; sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer.Language skills:Spoken and written English or French, having the ability to understand and speak in professional contexts, with a commitment to learn the other language.
