Furthermore, the ASG section is in charge of the acquisition and processing of high accuracy point cloud data defined in the primary CERN reference frame (CCS).The High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project aims to maximize the performance of the LHC, significantly enhancing its discovery potential beyond 2029. The goal is to increase the LHC’s integrated luminosity by a factor of ten compared to its original design. To achieve this, over one kilometer of the LHC will be upgraded during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3), starting in mid-2026. Advanced components, including cryo-magnets, collimators, crab cavities, and superconducting links, will be installed in the tunnel.As a Survey Engineer in the Accelerator Surveying & Geodesy (ASG) section, you will be part of the team in charge of the metrology and the alignment of the HL-LHC accelerator components.You will be using state-of-the-art surveying tools and software to achieve the sub-millimetre accuracy necessary to achieve our goals.In this role you will:Perform HL-LHC metrology measurements at all stages of the assembly of accelerator components from manufacturing controls of mechanical parts to final transfer measurements using laser tracker technology.Ensure geometrical conformity as a key aspect of quality control throughout the production process.Carry out fiducialisation-process of defining the mechanical axes of components and transferring this information to external targets for precise alignment.Utilize Laser Tracker Instruments and Spatial Analyzer to perform high-precision measurements.Execute and supervise metrology tasks, including measurement operations, calculations, and documentation.Collaborate with a team of experts to build, inspect, and finalize next-generation accelerator components.Perform the alignment of various components throughout the CERN complex, ensure the maintenance of the related survey infrastructure and geodetic networks,Your profileSkillsExperience in high precision measurements (laser tracker, photogrammetry, 3D scanning)Experience in 3D measurements analysis using least square adjustment applicationsAbility to draw up measurement reports and technical proceduresExperience in using surveying analysis software, experience in metrology software (eg. This section is in charge of consultancy and support in the cryogenic fields of scientific and technical studies within CERN, focusing on design, metrology, calibration, measurements, quality assurance, tests and validation of technical solutions.Your main project will be to conduct a study on the performance of low-temperature thermal links which will enable the effective cooling and operation of components below 2.0 K.You will conduct calculations for thermodynamics and fluid dynamics to evaluate the feasibility of cooling options and compare them with values obtained through experimentation with the aforementioned thermal links. The goal is to study conduction cooling in high-purity metal structures and compare them with active helium-filled cooling circuits. You will need to consider conditions such as mechanical flexibility, cooldown behaviour and integration in the cryogenic setups. Additionally, the low-temperature thermal boundary resistance requires attention when studying the overall system performance.Performing test campaigns on established thermal conductivity measurement stations will enable you to distinguish between the influence of pressed interfaces and thermal transport properties.The project will include the mechanical design of a test cryostat, its instrumentation, and the data acquisition required for these. In this role, you will contribute your expertise to the team by overseeing the production of collimators and masks within WP5 of the High-Luminosity LHC Project.The role involves supporting critical operational tasks, such as mechanical assemblies, components logistics, on-site assembly area management, execution of assembly and testing procedures related to collimators and masks essential for LS3 (Long Shutdown 3).This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a crucial phase of the HL-LHC Project (WP5).
