The project presents many interesting challenges due to the large volume of processed and stored data, the large scale and distributed nature of the systems, and strict availability and reliability requirements.The NextGeneration Archiver currently supports storing data in InfluxDB, Oracle, and PostgreSQL through dedicated backends. Take part!You will join theAccelerator Systems Department(SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.The position will be in theBeam Loss Measurement Section(BL) of theBeam Instrumentation Group(BI). You will take part in the development of beam loss detectors for present and future accelerators, with strong involvement on the Future Circular Collider Electron-Positron (FCCee). You will have the opportunity to contribute to various fields including data analysis and simulations, research and development of new beam particles detectors and identify strategic directions for the development of future beam loss monitors.FunctionsYou will:Participate in the collection of beam loss detector specifications for FCCee;Study the evolution of the FCCee beam parameters and how they affect the choice of beam loss detection technologies;Participate in the definition of the beam loss detector layout for FCCee;Perform simulations to assess the detector response for the different technologies evaluated;Analysing, interpreting and summarising the results of measurements, describing and documenting results or developments; disseminating and publishing the outcomes;Represent CERN at conferences, workshops, academic training and outreach.QualificationsMaster’s degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of applied physics or engineering on beam instrumentation or beam losses or a related field.Experience:Demonstrated experience in data analysis, in particular on beam loss measurements in high energy physics;Experience in commissioning and operation of beam instrumentation or beam loss monitoring systems of an operational accelerator;Experience in the definition or integration of new equipment in accelerators layout.Technical competencies:Knowledge and application of gas based particle detection technologies;Analysis and interpretation of experimental data;Analysis and optimization of accelerator performance;Assembly and integration of detectors;Simulation, design and development of (parts of) detectors.Behavioural competencies:Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships; working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.Solving problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them.Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.Language skills:Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.Additional InformationEligibility and closing date:Diversityhas been an integral part of CERN’s mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.
