R&D Engineer Trainee (Geneva – Switzerland)
Within the Technical Department, we are looking for an R&D Engineer Trainee for a 6-month internship. You will support the R&D group in addressing the technical and regulatory challenges related to the implementation of Liquid Hydrogen (LH₂) in motorsport. You will also work will primarily focus on LH₂ systems, such as hydrogen storage tanks and refueling infrastructure, with strong emphasis on thermodynamic behavior, safety aspects, and performance analysis.
As part of this internship, you will have the opportunity to develop a thesis on the following topic:
“Thermodynamic Modeling of a Hydrogen Tank for Racing Applications: Focus on F1 & WEC Championships”.
The internship offers exposure to multiple FIA championships providing a unique opportunity to contribute to the future of sustainable racing technologies at the highest level.
MISSIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop a thermodynamic model for a liquid hydrogen (LH₂) tank
• Simulate the thermodynamic behavior of the liquid/gas mixture within the tank under racing conditions.
• Analyze system responses during safety device activation and/or boil-off events.
• Evaluate tank dynamics and pressure evolution over a lap or race using real or simulated engine consumption data.
Support the R&D team in regulatory development
• Contributing to the definition and refinement of technical criteria such as tank insulation performance, dormancy time, and refueling protocols.
• Providing simulation data and engineering input to inform regulatory discussions and working groups.
PROFILE:
• Student in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field, currently in the final year or undertaking a gap year
• Advanced knowledge in simulation, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics
• Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is required
• Proficiency in Python is essential; experience with other modeling/simulation tools is a plus.
• Curious, proactive, and able to navigate between multiple technical topics.
• Keen interest in cutting-edge technologies and sustainability in motorsport.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
